Phoenix is a city defined by its desert landscape. But running through its neighborhoods is an extensive network of canals that has helped shape the Valley for generations.

One of the more interesting places along that network is Arizona Falls, a hydroelectric facility built into the Arizona Canal near 56th Street and Indian School Road. It's a place thousands of people pass without necessarily giving it much thought.

For our latest original short film, Water Beneath the City, we wanted to take a closer look.

Finding the Film in an Ordinary Place

The idea was simple: find something interesting in a familiar environment and approach it without the conventions of a documentary or promotional video.

We weren't interested in explaining how Arizona Falls works or producing a traditional location profile. We wanted to explore the movement of water, the textures of the surrounding landscape, and the relationship between nature and the structures built to control it.

The film begins quietly, concentrating on the vegetation surrounding the canal. As the music develops, the imagery transitions toward moving water, concrete, and the architecture of the falls.

That progression was intentional. The soundtrack plays an important role in determining when the film reveals its central subject.

Letting the Images Tell the Story

Water Beneath the City is a short, music-driven film without narration or interviews.

Instead of explaining what viewers are seeing, we use composition, movement, pacing, and music to guide the experience.

The smaller details are as important as the wider views. Flowing water, architectural lines, changing light, and the surrounding vegetation become individual elements of a larger visual composition.

The goal isn't necessarily to make Arizona Falls look like somewhere else. It's to encourage viewers to notice something they might otherwise overlook.

A Different Approach to Original Filmmaking

This production is part of an ongoing series of original cinematic films from Two Second Media.

We're exploring places, activities, and environments throughout Arizona, looking for subjects that offer an interesting visual story. Some will be recognizable locations. Others may be places most people would never consider filming.

Each production is an opportunity to experiment with cinematography, editing, visual storytelling, and the relationship between images and music.

For us, that's part of what makes filmmaking interesting. A compelling film doesn't always require an extraordinary location. Sometimes it requires a different way of looking at an ordinary one.
